On March 12th, the South Windsor Arena wasn't just filled with the joyful sounds of ice skaters; it was also brimming with the spirit of giving! Local Girl Scout troops gathered to celebrate the 113th birthday of Girl Scouts of the USA, founded by the visionary Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia, back in 1912.
Instead of simply enjoying the festive ice-skating event, these dedicated young women and their leaders chose to commemorate the occasion by embodying the Girl Scout slogan: "Do a good deed daily." They organized a heartwarming Birthday Bag collection, bringing an array of gift bags, cake mixes, frosting, candles, and paper goods to the arena. They were then divided into birthday bags and distributed to The Cornerstone Clothing Bank Etc. of Rockville.
This generous outpouring of support wasn't a random act of kindness. The South Windsor Girl Scout leaders and their troops specifically chose to donate these birthday essentials to The Cornerstone, a local organization known for its unwavering dedication to helping individuals and families who are clients of their Clothing Bank, Etc.
Lisa Kopper, one of the Girl Scout leaders said,” scout leaders and their troops know that Cornerstone is dedicated to helping everyone in the tri-town area and they will support its activities when a need is presented”.
The Birthday Bags will undoubtedly bring smiles and a sense of celebration to those served by Cornerstone.
This act of service perfectly represents the values instilled in Girl Scouts: compassion, community, and making the world a better place. As they celebrated 113 years of empowering girls, the South Windsor troops demonstrated that the spirit of Juliette Gordon Low continues to shine brightly, one good deed at a time.
