Homelessness in Connecticut: A Crisis Impacting Our Community

Updated: Aug 2

Homelessness in Connecticut is an escalating crisis, one that affects thousands of residents and reverberates through every corner of the state. The statistics are sobering: in just the last month, 4,812 state residents experienced homelessness, a number that continues to grow as housing costs rise and affordable options dwindle. As Senator Richard Blumenthal recently highlighted during a discussion with advocates, this issue is not only a social and economic problem but also a pressing public health crisis.

The Situation in Vernon-Rockville

Here in Vernon-Rockville, the situation is equally dire. Our community, like many others across Connecticut, faces the harsh realities of homelessness daily. The impact is felt not just by those without homes but by the entire community. Homelessness affects public safety, health services, and the overall quality of life in our neighborhoods.

At Cornerstone, we see the effects firsthand. Our three shelters are perpetually at full capacity, serving as critical lifelines for those in need. Notably, Cornerstone is the only family triage facility in the state, offering shelter for families who would otherwise have nowhere to turn. Our facilities provide a safe haven, but the demand far exceeds our resources.

The Broader Picture

Across Connecticut, the increasing number of people experiencing homelessness underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions. Advocates stress the importance of federal aid, enhanced mental health services, better conditions for nonprofit workers, and robust support for affordable housing. As Sarah Fox, CEO of the Connecticut Coalition To End Homelessness, pointed out, the average stay in shelters has ballooned from 30 to 180 days, illustrating the inadequacy of current housing vouchers and the severe shortage of affordable housing units.

How You Can Help

The fight against homelessness requires a community-wide effort. Here are some ways you can make a difference:

1. Volunteer: Cornerstone relies on volunteers to help with everything from meal preparation to administrative tasks. Your time can make a significant impact.

2. Donate: Financial contributions help us maintain our shelters and expand our services. Every dollar goes directly to supporting those in need.

3. Advocate: Raise awareness about homelessness and advocate for policies that support affordable housing and mental health services.

4. Support Local Efforts: Participate in local fundraisers and events aimed at supporting the homeless. Your involvement strengthens our community's ability to address this crisis.

Homelessness is a complex issue that requires multifaceted solutions and community involvement. At Cornerstone, we remain committed to providing essential services and advocating for the resources necessary to support our most vulnerable neighbors. By working together, we can help ensure that everyone in Vernon-Rockville and across Connecticut has a safe place to call home.
